As Australian architects increasingly export their services abroad, how can students and architects be better prepared for the demands of working in the Asia Pacific region?

Join Thomas Daniell, visiting architect and scholar from the University of Saint Joseph in Macau, Paul Henry, Populous senior principal and CEO of the Asian region, Manu Sobti and Pedro Guedes, academics from the University of Queensland School of Architecture, for a discussion about mobility as a historic practice and a contemporary condition.

Manu and Pedro will contextualize mobility. Manu will frame the conversation around the significant mobilities of Asian peoples in history, and the impact on cultural identities and the trade of ideas, people and things within the region. Pedro will introduce the impacts of the first globalization, when the Americas augmented and enriched the old world through the sometimes enforced mobility of people and goods, temporarily shifting the centres of continental hegemony away from Asia. Thomas will consider the consequences of mobility on the urban growth of Macau as a hybrid European/Asian condition, expanding on the impact for design teaching. Paul from Populous will unpack the consequences of mobility in contemporary practice, discussing Philippine Arena in Manila, developed by the Iglesia ni Cristo Church.

To close, UQ researcher Silvia Micheli, will facilitate the discussion and field questions from the audience.

In support of the colloquium and during the two-week Asia Pacific Architecture Forum, UQ Architecture will exhibit student work from travel studios to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India and a speculative studio based in North Korea.
