Biography

Dr Gene Sherman AM is founder and executive director of Sherman Centre for Culture & Ideas (SCCI), a cultural exchange platform focusing on contemporary fashion and architecture. Partnering with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, The Museum of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School for a defined time frame (2018–2022), SCCI follows Dr Sherman’s decade as chairman and executive director of Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (2008–2017), a philanthropic organization commissioning and presenting thirty-seven projects of significant contemporary art from Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East.

From 1986 to 2007 she was director and proprietor of Sherman Galleries, organizing up to twenty-two exhibitions annually, with a focus on artists from Australia and the Asia-Pacific. She is Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales, Art and Design, and a board member of both the Australian Institute of Art History and Sydney Contemporary. Dr Sherman is co-chair of the Tate Asia-Pacific Acquisitions Committee and a member of the Tate International Council and the International Association of Art Critics. She also works as an Asialink Asia Literacy Ambassador, a role that involves inspiring young people to become Asia-literate and thus expand their career and life opportunities.

Dr Sherman regularly lectures to a wide range of institutions on contemporary architecture and fashion, philanthropy, private foundations, Australian and Asian contemporary artists, gallery management and the art of collecting. Dr Sherman’s awards include Member of the Order of Australia in 2010 for her cultural philanthropy and her support of emerging and established artists, a Doctorate of Letters honoris causa, The University of Sydney (2008), and Honorary Doctorate of Design, University of Technology Sydney (2017). The French Government has acknowledged Dr Sherman with two awards: the Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2016), and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2003).
