The Out of the Auditory symposium is a one-day event that explores local research and practices concerning the sonic properties of site, materials and spaces as creative influences within architectural design. Speakers, panellists and performers from architecture, design, acoustics, music performance and music technology will discuss ways of understanding creative and site-specific thinking about sound within architecture.
Aural architecture has primarily been understood in terms of spatially-induced affective responses to sound. The symposium will ways of understanding, analysing and representing the sound qualities of urban and rural sites, as well as the integration of qualitative thinking about the sonic properties of materials and spaces into design thinking. The event builds on the 2015 public lecture series and a collaboration between Griffith University Architecture and the Queensland Conservatorium. Out of the Auditory is supported by the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects.
