Info
Concrete has enabled the form and density of our urbanizing environment. Perhaps due to its ubiquity and apparent homogeneity, however, it is often overlooked or considered banal. Concrete’s rich history as a material that enables our modern ambitions to be fulfilled through minimal design and architecture is well known, yet the concrete foundations on which we construct our built environment quite literally have a different side. Concrete can also be a material of the earth, rich with character, texture and all the heterogeneity of postmodernism.
Curated by Richard Stride, Material #01: Concrete launches a new series of exhibitions investigating materials, exploring the diversity and potential of concrete across all creative fields – from the handmade to the industrially manufactured. This exhibition brings together architecture, design, art, and jewellery to break the moulds of expectation that we often unknowingly hold for concrete.
Opening event: Friday 31 March, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Free entry, no bookings required.
