Working to extend the activities of the Institute of Modern Art into the existing and underutilized courtyard, a collaboration was developed between artist Celine Condorelli, architect Dirk Yates and landscape designer Pete Shields. Through considerations of principles of subtropical design, such as site qualities, solar orientation, means of construction, integration of plantings and architectural precedents, a unique and dynamic shade structure has been established.
Orientated to the north-west, the courtyard favours a vertical structure to provide afternoon shade. In Brisbane’s subtropical climate being in an outdoor venue that is protected without the need of having a roof structure directly overhead can be a delight. In consideration for midday sun, flowering vines are positioned to grow across the horizontal frame of the structure and form a lush green brise soleil.
Constructed from steel-tubes, proprietary fixings and corrugated fibreglass sheets, the structure may be readily disassembled and re-used in the future.
