Biography

Andrew Cortese joined Grimshaw in 2009 and established the Sydney studio in 2010. Andrew has been instrumental in the design leadership of the Australian practice working into all project sectors, including establishing multi-discipline collaborative teams in significant public projects. His principal achievements have been in urban planning at scales from precincts to cities, the architecture and urban design of complex state significant projects with respect to infrastructure, tall buildings, science and learning, culture, sports and housing, and the industrial design of urban componentry. 

Andrew's projects have been recipient of national and international awards, and citations for design excellence, all being acknowledged for their subtle response to place, the pre-eminence of the programs derived for organizational cultural initiatives, for its unique expressive structures and material qualities, and for the inception of certified environmental innovation. Andrew’s most significant realised and current projects include Sydney Metro Martin Place, CBD and South East Light Rail, Arthur Phillip High School and Parramatta Public School and the Monash University Woodside Building for Technology and Design.  Andrew is the Managing Partner of the Sydney Studio, and a Trustee of the Grimshaw Foundation, established in 2020 to be the sponsor of the philanthropic programmes of the practice and the legacy of Sir Nicholas Grimshaw.  Andrew was appointed to the NSW State Design Review Panel in 2021.
