Biography

Palinda Kannangara Architects is known for an experiential approach to architecture that hinges on simplicity and a connection with the natural environment. The firm’s work has been recognized for its contextual sensitivity, crafted use of materials and a minimalism reflective of the Sri Lankan ethos. Palinda Kannangara Architects’ award-winning portfolio spans the breadth of Sri Lanka, from the dry zone, to the wetlands, to the coast on a diverse palette of projects, often small in scale. 

The firm has been the recipient of several prestigious national and international awards during its 16 years of practice. Its Studio Dwelling at Rajagiriya was the winner of the RIBA International Award for Excellence in 2018. More recently, the practice received the RIBA International Award for Excellence for Artist Retreat at Pittugala and the 5th Triennial Geoffrey Bawa Award for Excellence in Architecture for Frame Holiday Structure at Imaduwa. Palinda Kannangara Architects’ work has been featured in the recent issue of El Croquis 212 architecture monograph.
